FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A cat sitting on a light fixture on the 17th Street Causeway bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway caused a bit of a commotion Wednesday afternoon, but it safely made its way off right as a rescue crew approached.

The cat then crossed traffic and made itself comfortable on the other side of the bridge. When rescuers approached it there, the cat scampered back to the other side again, making itself at home under a fire rescue truck and then back to a perch under the bridge’s railing.

The Sky 10 chopper was over the scene for more than 45 minutes. Rescue workers ultimately left the area and let the cat be.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said a call came in at 2:49 p.m. and that eight units responded and worked with the Florida Department of Transportation to use one of their specialized trucks.

They believe it was a feral cat, as there is a large population of them under the bridge.

The fire department says they ultimately didn’t make further attempts to apprehend the cat so as to not cause injury or have it run into traffic or jump off the bridge.

The rescue effort did lead to some temporary traffic delays, but cars are now moving in both directions again.
