More than 1,000 dead fish removed from lake in Boca Raton neighborhood

Crews with Allstate Resource Management, which does lake care and wetland maintenance was hired by the Boca Raton Monday to clean up hundreds of dead fish in Lake Sabel near the Boca Square neighborhood.

Crews spent about four hours cleaning up dead fish. They picked up more than 1,000 decomposed fish of various species from the water.

Preliminary reports from the Boca Raton Municipal Services Department show the fish died from low oxygen levels. On Friday, those levels were at a 2, but on Monday, new samples were taken, and the city says the levels went up to a 7.

It’s still unclear what caused this to happen.

Many people living around the lake said they are relieved the dead fish have been removed, which helps with the smell, but said they are still concerned about potential toxins in the water. They said they would like to have more testing done.

“We are very relieved the smell has gone, I am glad to have those dead fish out of the water and we’re just hoping doesn’t happen again and that we can do something to prevent it from happening in the future,” neighbor Georgiana Manning said.

“We want them to find out exactly what caused this,” another neighbor, Jodi Breakell, said. “I’m hoping they will do extensive tests on the water to make sure that something else is not going on.”

The Lake Worth Drainage District said they’ll be contacting the Department of Environmental Protections and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to request further testing.

City leaders said they are discussing the next steps.
