2 transported after police-involved shooting in Miami Gardens

A police-involved shooting in Miami Gardens has sent two people to the hospital.

According to Miami Gardens Police, the shooting occurred at the 2200 block of Bunche Park Drive, just after 2 p.m., Monday.

The Miami Gardens Police chief told 7News that her officer came under fire during a routine traffic stop that triggered a small chase.

Joshua Mobley lives nearby, and said he heard the commotion.

“I heard about three shots or something like that,” he said.

The chief said police tried to stop the car a second time.

“The vehicle refused to stop and proceeded to go towards 27th Avenue,” Noel-Pratt said.

The vehicle took off and eventually crashed into one other car at Northwest 27th Avenue and 159th Street.

The other driver was forced into a fence, and 7SkyForce hovered over the scene of the damage.

“Three individuals are in custody right now. We have a few firearms that are in our custody right now,” Noel-Pratt said.

One of the subjects apparently tried to swim away from police down a nearby canal, but they caught up with him.

Two people were transported to the hospital in unknown condition. One of the subjects suffered a minor gunshot wound, according to police.

“It shocked me, and I was like, ‘When is this gonna stop?’” Mobley said.

Unfortunately, the chief said she’s not surprised things escalated quickly.

“We don’t know why. That’s just what we deal with nowadays a lot of times,” Noel-Pratt said.

Police seized several weapons during the traffic stop.

FDLE is taking over the police-involved shooting investigation per policy.
