Detectives search for driver of white Kia after fatal hit-and-run in Miami Beach

Officers are searching for the person who was behind the wheel of a white 2020 Kia Sorrento with Florida tag KCMD06 that they say was involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash Thursday night in Miami Beach.

Detectives said the driver ran over a man who was crossing Fifth Street at Michigan Avenue around 7 p.m. and sped away — leaving South Beach westbound on the MacArthur Causeway.

The victim died at the hospital Friday morning, police confirmed. He was in his 50s but his name was not released.

Officer Ernesto Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department, said the pedestrian did not have the right of way, but the driver’s decision to leave the scene will result in serious charges.

“The vehicle had the right of way, the pedestrian did not. That vehicle, though, chose to not stop and fled, which resulted in this man’s death,” Rodriguez said.

Detectives on Friday located the Kia Sorrento, which was being towed from Opa-locka to the Miami Beach Police Department so it could be swept for evidence.

“Crime scene will comb through that vehicle, extract DNA and extract any other evidence that may be inside that vehicle that will tell us who was driving at the time that victim was struck,” Rodriguez said.

He added that police found the vehicle through a tip from Crime Stoppers, but they are still searching for whoever was driving it Thursday night.
