Brightline’s new train service to Tampa could run at higher speeds than previously announced, a company executive said this month.

The new higher speed could make Brightline a true high-speed train service by some definitions. Brightline previously had planned a top speed of 125 miles per hour.

“We’re looking at opportunities of getting up to 150 miles per hour on the straightaways of I-4,” said Christine Kefauver, Brightline’s senior vice president of corporate development.

The company plans on building its own secured corridor between Orlando and Tampa, as it is now doing between Cocoa and Orlando. The newly built secured corridor will allow for higher speed.

Passengers will be able to get from Miami to Tampa in about four hours, according to Kefauver.

Pricing will a bit less than flying, and comparable to the IRS reimbursement rate for driving – around 55 cents per mile.

Kefauver made the comments during a presentation to the Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization, first reported by St. Pete Catalyst.

The company is getting closer to resolving a dispute in Orlando over routing, and completion of the Tampa extension is planned by 2028 at the latest.
