Man dies in hit-and-run crash after leaving Miami Gun Show

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Derek Mann said one moment he saw a man looking at products in the Miami Gun Show and moments later he saw him die on Saturday in Miami-Dade County’s University Park neighborhood.

Mann, of Pompano Beach, said he came out of Tamiami Park and was on Coral Way approaching the Florida Turnpike when he saw the man darted across the road.

“The guy ran in front of us to cross the street from the bus stop. We hit the breaks. The other guy hit him probably going 50 to 60 mph, swerved around, and just took off,” Mann said.

Mann, 41, said the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run crash was in a white two-door Mercedes-Benz Coupe with tinted windows.

“The guy flew into the air about 20 feet in front of us and slid to his death,” Mann said.

The Miami-Dade Police Department hasn’t released the victim’s identity. Mann said he remembered seeing the man in the gun show because of his “outrageous” outfit.

“I heard detectives say he was 70. He had long white hair. He was dressed feminine,” Mann said. “He was wearing leggings and a T-shirt … He had a purse.”

An officer placed his purse on top of the yellow tarp that covered his body on Coral Way, which officers first closed in both directions, between 109th and 115th avenues.
