Miami cutting Kyle Van Noy — should Giants be interested?

The Miami Dolphins are releasing edge defender Kyle Van Noy. That begs the question — is Van Noy a player the New York Giants should pursue once he becomes a free agent?

A 29-year-old, seven-year veteran, Van Noy is a player the Giants were thought to be interested in as a free agent a year ago. Van Noy was a member of the New England Patriots from 2017-2019, where current Giants coach Joe Judge was special teams coordinator. Those three seasons, when he compiled 15.5 sacks and 34 quarterback hits, were arguably his three best seasons as an NFL player.

Van Noy signed a four-year, $51 million deal with the Dolphins before the 2020 season. He had 6.0 sacks, 69 tackles and 10 quarterback hits in 14 games. Per Over The Cap, Miami saves $9.775 million against the 2021 salary by cutting him.

Van Noy took to social media to express his disappointment.

“I am surprised and disappointed in their decision. As a captain, I gave my all to the team. I fought through a painful hip injury during the season, including spending a night in the hospital after a game. I was brought there to be a leader and I know my teammates looked up to and respected me. I am looking forward to making an impact on my next team, on and off the field.”

Van Noy is a player I thought made sense for the Giants a year ago. A year later I still think so, provided the price is right.
