Officer Hospitalized After Woman Runs Them Over, Shots Fired in North Miami Beach

An officer was hospitalized after being run over by a woman during an encounter that ended with shots fired in North Miami Beach Thursday, police said.

The incident happened in the area of Northeast 172nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard.

Footage showed multiple officers at the scene and the area closed off with police tape.

North Miami Beach Police officials said the woman had reportedly been involved in a hit-and-run in nearby Aventura earlier in the day.

An officer who was responding spotted the red vehicle and that’s when officials said the woman used the vehicle as a weapon, running over the officer.

Officials said an officer discharged their weapon during the encounter but it was unknown if the suspect was hit by the gunfire.

The officer was hospitalized after the incident but was expected to be ok, officials said.

“The female driver of the red vehicle struck the officer, causing some serious injuries, shots were fired, a K-9 was deployed and the female was stopped,” North Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Rand said.

The female suspect was also reportedly hospitalized but her injuries and condition were unknown.

Aventura Police said all southbound traffic from 186th Street and Biscayne Boulevard was being re-routed until further notice.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be investigating the shooting.
