Two suspects have been taken into custody in the case of a 7-year-old girl killed in a shooting.

Alana Washington, her aunt, uncle and one-year-old relative were just returning to a home on Northwest 51st Street and 29th Avenue when a car drove up and someone opened fire.

Alana was the only one killed in the shooting.

Local 10 News’ Roy Ramos spoke with Alana’s mother, who said she is grateful for this day. She knows that having two men in custody means she is one step close to getting justice for her daughter.

“I got a phone call that said, ‘I am calling you to let you know that we have two people,’” Niecy Drayton said. “Even though I know we got a long road, but I still thank God for this day.”

Niecey said the suspects were detained Wednesday and are expected to be arrested on murder charges.

She said since the drive-by shooting in Brownsville July 25th, Miami-Dade police have been diligent in tracking down the killers.

“They never let up, they never let up,” she said. “I was not going to let up and I am still not going to let up.”

She said not a day passes that she doesn’t think of her daughter, who she described as adventurous, bright, beautiful and intelligent.

Now, with the men responsible for the child’s death in custody, it gives her some peace, knowing they are unable to hurt anyone else.

“The hardest thing is, I am never going to see her again, but the best thing is they are going to get off the street and they won’t be able to do this to anybody else,” she said.
